Villierstown’s Musical History
Villierstown has a rich tradition in Irish music. One of Villierstown’s most musical sons Paddy Parker was a highly respected fiddle player throughout Ireland. He composed and played traditional Irish music around the country and was recorded for RTE radio shows including the popular “Ceilī House” on Radio 1. Paddy tutored many students one of whom was Tony Lineen who was considered to be one of Irelands finest fiddle players, especially of Slow Airs. Some of the many more talented musicians in the area include; Ned & Jim Mernin who played accordion, Jimmy Nugent and John Cullinan who were fine fiddlers, Dick Ryan plays accordion, Ned Keane is an accomplished mouth-organist, and the lilting sounds of Pat Baileys music can be heard wafting on the breeze through the village any fine day as he perfects his traditional styling’s on tin whistle, flute, fiddle and saxophone!
