Water Sports
Since the 18th century Villierstown Quay has served the needs of all river users. It was built originally to facilitate the commercial trade of the river Blackwater. In it’s life time it has seen Barges, Steamboats, Masted Schooners and Ferry Boats acting as a gateway to much of Munster.
Today with little commercial traffic Villierstown Quay remains the most accessible slipway on the river Blackwater, with vast open stretch’s to suit all types of boating. Although still serving the commercial fishing sector and boat cruises, Villierstown has become very popular amongst recreational users with miles of waterways waiting to be explored.
Canoeing-rowing-sailing-skiing and pleasure boating now all take place at Villierstown Quay servicing the needs of locals and visitors alike.
Water Activity Programme
Launching in 2011, the VECP intend to start a water activity programme for Villierstown and surrounding areas. Through our affiliation with the ISA, the National governing body for competitive and recreational boating in Ireland as a category 3 club, we can avail of their full expertise and training advice.
Water Safety
During the year we hope to run some training course on different aspects of boating and water Safety, from general water safety, to proper boating planning, swimming and first aid. We hope to encourage young and old to take part in this programme with an internationally recognised certification on completion.
Boat Building
We a currently building a prototype small sailboat which we intend to use as a training vessel for children and young adults in conjunction with the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) .If this proves successful we plan to run a boat building programme to build these craft for parents & kids, the idea is to build the boat and then learn to sail it. This would be great for children to experience and gain valuable life long water safety skills.
If you have an interest in boating or want to help out in any aspect of these programmes the VECP would be more than grateful for any help you could offer. We’re taking names now. Limited space for year one.
