Running in Villierstown has been made famous by the hard work and tremendous success of John Treacy.  Twice world cross country champion in ‘78 & ‘79 and an Olympic Silver medalist in ‘84  ranks John amongst the sporting greats of this country.

There are two events held in Villierstown each year, in May the village plays host to ‘The John Treacy Classic’, an event held to honour the legendary achievements of John Treacy . In June the Dromana Five is a five mile road race from Villierstown to Cappoquin.

THE JOHN TREACY CLASSIC

The John Treacy Classic takes place in Villierstown in May of each year.  The local community in association with Waterford County Council, Waterford Sports Partnership and West Waterford Athletic club come together to pay tribute to John’s achievements.

The event comprises of a 10 mile Road Race, a 5k Fun Run/Walk , a 1k Fun Run /Walk followed by refreshments.  This is a great way to get active and come together to honour a true legend.  More information can be found on http://www.thejohntreacyclassic.com/

THE DROMANA FIVE

The Dromana Five is a 5 mile road race that takes place between Villierstown and Cappoquin each summer.  Taking place in June this is another opportunity for athlete’s to test themselves on John Treacy’s former training ground. Currently in it’s 18th year the mens record is still held by none other than John Treacy.  The event forms part of the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series .
